Welcome Message from President of Genetics Society of Malaysia

Dear Colleagues,

Greetings from the Organising Committee of Malaysia International Genetics Congress (MIGC14) .

Assalamualaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh and Salam Sejahtera.

It gives great pleasure for Genetics Society of Malaysia to host the 14th Malaysia International Genetics Congress (MIGC14) on 15-17 March 2021 fully virtual. The theme of this year congress is `Translating Genes for a Better Future’. The Society is indeed very honoured to organise this Congress with the full cooperation and support of Malaysian Node of the Human Variome Project (MyHVP), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, and other key co-organisers, and significant contributions by collaborators, sponsors and exhibitors, both from public and private sectors. The Society strives to organise various activities towards fulfilling its primary objectives, namely to develop and promote scientific knowledge on genetics, to create public awareness on its importance and advancements, and to foster a strong relationship and understanding between scientists in genetics and other fields. The First National Congress on Genetics was held over 25 years ago in 1994. This Congress will be the 14th edition of such Congress on Genetics. Read more.

Professor Dr. Abd Rahman Milan
President
Genetics Society of Malaysia

Chairman of the organising committee MIGC14

Dear Colleagues,

Greetings from the Organising Committee of Malaysia International Genetics Congress (MIGC14).

Throughout the world, the Covid 19 pandemic continues to impact face-to-face scientific meetings. Many conferences are cancelled, postponed, or changed to virtual meetings. Since the Genetic Congress of Malaysia started 26 years ago, it has always been held as a face-to-face meeting. This year, however, the Genetics Society of Malaysia has decided to host a fully virtual conference. So, it is with great excitement that the organising committee looks forward to this new experience and challenge in organising a virtual meeting.

The Genetics Society of Malaysia (PGM) will co-host the congress (now known as Malaysia International Genetic Congress (MIGC) with the Malaysian Node of Human Variome Project (MyHVP), a consortium of geneticists, researchers and medical experts from over 12 local universities and institutions to bring together a bigger network of geneticists and experts in the field. To ensure a wider participation of geneticists, scientists and researchers and success of the conference, PGM and MyHVP will also collaborate with a number of academic institutions that include Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), International Islamic University (IIUM), Perdana University, Forest Research Institute (FRIM) and Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB).

The theme of this year’s conference is “Translating genes for a better future”. Advances in new technology and techniques have enabled us to learn more about our genes and better understand their functions. One of the recent discoveries is the CRISPR technology, which is a simple yet powerful tool for editing genomes, allowing researchers to easily alter DNA sequences and modify gene function. Its potential applications include correcting genetic defects, treating human diseases especially those with a genetic cause, and improving crops. The conference will feature regarded speakers in CRISPR technology, who will share their experience and expertise to benefit those working in this field.

In response to the global fight against the Covid-19 pandemic, a special session has been included in this conference to engage participating researchers and geneticists in knowledge-sharing of the disease in particular the genetic background based on research findings of the Covid-19 virus from various countries. To those who are conducting research in this new area, your participation as poster or oral presenters to share your research findings is welcomed.

As genetics and genomics continue to change and shape our future, knowledge on our genes and how to deal with its function and its potential is vital as we surge forward to a new frontier. We have put together a programme that brings renowned speakers from all over the world to speak and share with us their research findings. The speaker for the Mendel Lecture 2020 is Dr Nik Serena Nik Zainal. Born and raised in Malaysia, she attended school at Bukit Bintang Girls School in Kuala Lumpur before being awarded the prestigious PETRONAS scholarship in 1993, obtaining a first class degree in Physiology at the University of Cambridge before completing her medical degree in 2000. She undertook a PhD at the Wellcome Sanger Institute (WSI) in 2009 and was awarded a Wellcome Trust Intermediate Clinical fellowship in 2013. In 2017, she was awarded a CRUK Advanced Clinician Scientist Fellowship. Her work has been published in many high impact journals such as Nature (3 papers as the first author), Nature Genetics, Nature Communication, Nature Medicine, Nature Reviews, Nature Cell Biology and Cell. In addition, she was awarded the Dr Josef Steiner Cancer Research Prize 2019. The award, commonly dubbed the “Nobel Prize in cancer research”, was presented to her for her work on cancer genome interpretation. Her research work allows for mutations in cancer tumours to be analysed using new bio-informatic methods, which in turn enables new approaches to targeted therapies.

I hope the long list of renowned speakers that have been put together for this conference will attract many participants to attend this meeting.

I look forward to meeting you all virtually this March.

14th Malaysia International Genetic Congress (MIGC14)

Introduction

Genetics is a very important and exciting field which is progressing very rapidly. The discoveries and information generated from research have the potential for providing better quality of life, improving food safety and security, and having an impact on a nation’s economic and development. This Congress will be its fourteenth debut of the Genetics Congress Series organized by Genetics Society of Malaysia, which begun in 1995. Due to the overwhelming success of the previous events, we are pushing this fourteenth version into a bigger role in strengthening genetics advances for the future.

"Boosted by successes of the previous congresses, the society will make every effort, and will push on with a bigger and wider role to internationalise its scientific activities,”

This 3-day congress will address the latest advances in various genetic activities and its achievements. More than 30 keynote and invited speakers will be presenting their views and findings in this congress. The congress will provide opportunities and gather as many geneticists, breeders, scientists, researchers, academicians, biotechnologists, industrialists and students to share their latest knowledge, experiences and achievements in genetics related improvement programmes.
